How To Handle Common Dental Emergencies
A dental emergency can range from an unexpected accident to a toothache that develops gradually over time. At Brooks Dental, we can handle both types of emergencies. Always start by giving us a call to schedule the first available appointment and use the following tips to handle the situation until we can see you.
Toothache or Swelling
A toothache is often a sign of a severe cavity or infection. In addition to pain and/or a throbbing sensation, you may notice facial swelling or a pimple-like bump on your gums. Start by swishing with lukewarm saltwater and gently holding a cold compress to the area. You can also take over-the-counter pain medication but remember that you still need treatment for the infection, even if the pain temporarily goes away.
Chipped or Broken Teeth
First, to remove any small pieces of tooth structure in your mouth, rinse and spit with lukewarm water. For pain, apply a cold compress and take over-the-counter pain medication as directed. If necessary, use dental wax from the drugstore to cover any sharp edges.
Knocked-Out Tooth
We’ll have the best chance of saving your tooth if we can see you within an hour, so, if for any reason you can’t see us within that timeframe, go to your nearest ER or urgent care center.
For immediate care while waiting to be seen, handle the tooth by the crown only (not the root) and gently rinse it off. If possible, put it back in its socket facing the right way. If that’s not an option, make sure it stays moist by putting it in a glass of cold milk or water (or your cheek pouch in a pinch) to make sure it stays moist.
Lost Filling or Dental Crown
If a dental crown falls off, start by rinsing and drying it off. Then put a small amount of dental cement from the store in it (or toothpaste as a last resort). Don’t use any other kind of glue or adhesive because it can make it more difficult to properly re-cement the crown when you arrive for treatment.
How To Prevent Dental Emergencies
As a dentist in Revere with many years of experience, we’ve found that prevention is always much easier than treatment. The first rule of prevention is to schedule regular checkups so we can monitor everything and prevent small problems from turning into emergencies.
Also, good brushing and flossing habits are critical for maintaining good dental health and will go a long way towards prevention. To protect your teeth from injuries, be sure to wear protective oral appliances as needed such as a mouthguard or nightguard. Finally, avoid habits like chewing on ice, pens, or hard candies.
The Cost of Treating Dental Emergencies
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to provide a universal figure that applies to every situation. Some emergencies require limited treatment such as a small filling, while others require more involved procedures such as a root canal and dental crown.
After one of our emergency dentists has done an exam, we’ll explain our findings and give you an estimate of cost. Whenever possible, we’ll also give you multiple treatment options so you can make the best decision for your personal circumstances. Most importantly, we’ll quickly relieve your pain and help you move forward with a healthy smile for many years.
