What are Veneers?

Unlike a crown, which surrounds and covers the entire tooth, a dental veneer consists of a thin shell of ceramic porcelain that is strongly cemented onto only the front surface of the tooth. This covering is shaded either to match the surrounding enamel or to a specified hue of white. Either way, veneers are fabricated to look completely natural. Crowns and veneers, from the front, look exactly the same and typically are made of the same ceramic material. While crowns add strength and protection to a tooth where necessary, veneers are purely for esthetics and are a fantastic opportunity to preserve healthy tooth structure.

The Process of Getting Veneers

As with all other dental procedures, having a smile makeover starts with a consultation. We will make sure your mouth is healthy, discuss your desires and goals, and create a treatment plan that will lead us to achieve your vision. This may involve a diagnostic “wax-up” (or mock-up), reviewing photos of similar case outcomes, or using a computer enhancement program to provide you with several options before performing the actual procedure.

Once you decide to move forward, Dr. Howard will gently re-shape the front sides of the teeth being treated to make space for the veneers. Digital impressions of the teeth will be taken and sent to the lab technician who will be fabricating the veneers. You will leave this appointment in “temporaries” or provisional veneers based on the original mock-up. When your ceramic veneers are finished (2-3 weeks later), you’ll return for your second appointment and have them bonded permanently into place.

The Benefits of Veneers

Although veneers require some modifications and reshaping of teeth, they truly deliver the strongest and most esthetic improvements to your smile and are certainly worth the investment. The ceramic materials available to us today are extremely natural, as they reflect light just like natural tooth enamel and have texture and anatomy artfully built into them.

Veneers are very durable and stain-resistant, and they have the potential to last a significant number of years with proper care.

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

When considering your cosmetic dental options, you’ll probably notice right away that veneers are on the more expensive side. Don’t let the initial cost scare you away from having more confidence in your smile. We offer several payment plan options that many of our patients take advantage of when investing in their new smile. Veneers can last for at least 15-20 years before requiring replacement, so you can enjoy your investment for a long time.

Veneers FAQs

Does Getting Veneers Hurt?

Having a portion of your enamel re-shaped may seem like it would be a potentially painful experience. However, we make sure you remain comfortable throughout this preparatory stage by numbing the area with local anesthetic. As it wears off, your teeth may feel a little sensitive for a few days. Once your customized ceramic veneers are bonded in place, any sensitivity should dissapate.

How Can I Make My Veneers Last as Long as Possible?

In general, veneers remain in good condition for decades, but the lifespan of yours will depend largely on how well you take care of them. In other words, if you practice good maintenance and wear a protective retainer or nightguard to sleep, they are likely to last longer than if you neglect them. Fortunately, veneer care is simple and identical to maintaining your real teeth, meaning that brushing and flossing daily goes a long way in keeping them clean. Regular visits at Brooks Dental for checkups and cleanings are also essential because we can watch out for any signs of wear and tear and do our part to keep them looking their best.

How Long Does It Take to Get Veneers?

Unlike in-office whitening, which can be completed in just one appointment, veneers do take a little more time to plan. Usually, this treatment requires at least two appointments with a few weeks in between for the lab technician to craft your veneers. If you are getting a full set of veneers, the dentist may require more visits. As a result, if you have a special event coming up like a wedding or a class reunion, we highly recommend making your first appointment well in advance to ensure you’re finished with treatment and prepared in time. When Dr. Howard meets with you, he can give you a more concrete timeline and let you know what to expect.

What Issues Can Veneers Fix?

Since a veneer covers the entire front surface of the tooth, it can hide many types of flaws, including chips, cracks, teeth crowding, staining or discoloration that won’t improve with whitening treatment, and misshapen or undersized teeth. The beautiful thing about veneers is that they can address all of these issues in one fell swoop. As long as your teeth are otherwise healthy and have enough healthy tooth structure for the veneer to attach to, you’ll likely make a good candidate for this treatment.
