Excited to start your Invisalign journey? You might want to skip straight to your results, but it will take time to get them. In the meantime, you will need to build a tray routine to avoid delays during your treatment. That said, this can be tough in the beginning. You can make this transition easier by getting to know these do’s and don’ts.

Do Get the Full Wear Time

Clear aligners apply gentle pressure to shift your teeth into their desired positions. This process can take several months, but you can get to your results as expected by wearing them for 20 to 22 hours every day. Not having them in for this long can lead to delays, so if you struggle to remember, set alarms and reminders to keep you on track.

Don’t Eat or Drink with Your Invisalign In

If you’re worried about getting the full wear time with your trays, you might be tempted to eat or drink with them. However, it’s a cardinal rule you don’t! Food can damage your thin plastic trays, and beverages can get trapped between them and your teeth. You can increase your risk of stains or cavities. You can only have water while they’re in, so a reusable bottle can help curb sudden cravings.

Do Tighten Your Oral Hygiene Routine

After you finish eating, you will need to brush and floss. Plaque and debris can transfer to your Invisalign, so do your dental hygiene routine beforehand. This can go a long way in avoiding decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. You might have trouble with this adjustment at first, but making it a habit can be well worth it.

Don’t Use Hot Water to Clean Your Trays

Not only will you need to scrub your smile, but your aligners as well. This can remove buildup on them and prevent stains. While you might use hot water for your dishes, don’t do it for your trays. The heat can warp the thin plastic, making them ineffective or dangerous to wear. Lukewarm to cold water is best, along with a soft-bristle toothbrush and clear, gentle soap.

It might take time for these do’s and don’ts to become habits, but consciously stick to them for now. That way, you can have a smoother transition with Invisalign and have an easier journey to your healthier bite.
