Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Tooth extractions are only recommended when all other options prove unsuccessful, so if Dr. Howard or Dr. Stephanie suggest the removal of one or more of your teeth, it is because:
- A significant cavity is causing damage to a tooth and posing a risk to nearby healthy teeth
- A tooth becomes fractured or broken and cannot be repaired with a root canal or dental crown
- Your child’s permanent tooth is trying to erupt but cannot because a primary tooth will not fall out on its own
- Advanced periodontitis is causing one or more teeth to loosen because of further bone loss
- One or more wisdom teeth appear impacted
- Overcrowding inhibits the successful administration of orthodontic treatment
Wisdom Tooth Extractions Winthrop

Wisdom tooth extractions in Winthrop are often considered a rite of passage for teenagers and young adults between the ages of 17 and 25. Although once useful for early humans who ate dense game, these teeth are no longer necessary, especially since facial structures and diets have evolved over time. However, since these third molars remain a part of the oral anatomy, they often become problematic when partially erupting or while remaining impacted beneath the gumline. Our Brooks Dental team of experts is here, though, to make the removal of these teeth easy and comfortable, so call us if you think it might be time to evaluate your teen’s smile.
The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process

When removing wisdom teeth, our dentists will determine how many must be extracted (1-4). Based on the current state of each tooth (partially erupted or impacted), a proposed plan will be prepared and shared with you during the initial visit.
If teeth are visible above the gumline, even partially, we will perform a simple procedure that begins with administering anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. We’ll then grasp it with specialized instruments and begin to gently move it back and forth until it releases.
If teeth are impacted, a more invasive surgical procedure is required. After being anesthetized by our dentists, we will make small incisions in the gums to access each tooth. To avoid further irritating or impacting the bone, we may decide to section the tooth and remove it in pieces for a smoother extraction process.
